The 7th of May, at the University of Pisa, the candidate Morena Angelucci defended her doctoral thesis titled “Coupling between System and CFD codes for the analysis of thermal-hydraulic phenomena relevant for LMFR”. Her research activity concerned the development and the use of multi-scale approach, i.e. coupled calculation between a system thermal-hydraulic code (RELAP5/Mod3.3) and a CFD code (ANSYS Fluent) to perform thermal-hydraulic analysis of heavy metal-cooled systems. The research included also an experimental activity performed at ENEA in Brasimone. Part of the PhD activity was involved in the SESAME project: the developed coupling tool was involved in WP5 concerning Integral System Simulations. In particular, a benchmark exercise was organized for the assessment of new multi-scale simulation approaches. The benchmark was based on experimental data of the NACIE-UP facility designed within WP4 of the SESAME project. The experimental part of the PhD activity concerned specifically the NACIE-UP tests aiming to investigate the heat transfer in a wire-spaced fuel bundle cooled by heavy liquid metal.
